On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, the Somerville Police and Cambridge Police, working collaboratively, served two search warrants at the homes of Ibrahim Barry, 18, Cambridge, and Craig Smith, 20, Cambridge, in furtherance of an investigation of a Somerville shooting incident that occurred on February 20, 2022 at 500 Mystic Avenue in Somerville.
Barry was arrested pursuant to a warrant issued by the Somerville District Court for armed assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and assault and battery by means of a firearm. Smith was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity feeding device, failure to properly store a firearm and possession of ammunition. An illegal loaded Glock, 40 caliber handgun was recovered from his home.
Somerville Police Chief Charles Femino and Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow are very pleased with the results of this collaborative effort. Gun violence, particularly violence involving youth in our two communities, has been an ongoing concern and priority for both agencies and we remain deeply committed to aggressively investigating and mitigating such harmful activity.
Armed Robbery
22037502: On 7/6/22 at approximately 3:28 AM, officers responded to Albion St for report of an armed robbery. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated an individual known to him assaulted him with a hammer then stole cash, an iPhone, Apple Watch and a gold necklace from him. The suspect then broke into the victim’s vehicle and stole several tools.
Commercial Breaking and Entering
22036028: On 6/28/22 at approximately 6:39 AM, Somerville Police responded to a business on Foley St for report of a past breaking and entering. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the reporting party who stated when he arrived to the business in the morning; he observed the door latch unhooked and equipment missing.
Armed Carjacking
22036749: On 7/1/22 at approximately 7:15 PM, Somerville Police responded to 460 Mystic Ave for report of an armed carjacking. Upon arrival, officers spoke with two juvenile victims who stated they were riding a moped in the area of 460 Mystic Ave and were confronted by three male suspects. During the confrontation, one of the suspects brandished a firearm then stole the moped and fled down Mystic Ave toward McGrath Hwy. The other two suspects left in the same direction.
Residential Breaking and Entering
22035329: On 6/24/22 at approximately 10:04 AM, a male party entered the station and reported that the day prior, a male party known to him broke into his house in the area of Highland Ave & Waldo St. Nothing was reported missing.
On June 14th at around 11PM the Somerville Police were on Washington St doing a follow up on an incident. As the officers were doing this, a pickup truck pulled over and a man got out to talk to the officers. His wife was in labor and was about to give birth. Quickly switching roles from law enforcement to medical aid, Lt. Vivolo, Officer Reece, and Officer Dylan Lambert assisted this expecting mom. Lt. Vivolo tried to get her comfortable and assessed her current status, while Ofc. Reece called for an ambulance, reassured her, and got information from the husband. They were on their way to Mt. Auburn Hospital, but realized they weren't going to make it.
