Meritorious Service Award - Firearms Recovered

On the morning of March 25, 2022, Officers Mackenzie Richardson, Alex Lorenti, Joseph Moreira and Detective Jason Costa were assigned to serve a Harassment Prevention Order and an Arrest Warrant to a male party residing at 32 Kent Street # 308.  Prior to the Officer’s responding to Kent St. an operational plan was established.   Detective Costa provided the Officer’s with information pertaining to the individual’s past violent criminal history and possession of firearms.  Based on this information and for the safety of the Officers, the goal was to inform the male party of the HPO and serve him outside of the curtilage.

Assault

22040254: On 7/19/22 at approximately 10:13 PM, Somerville Police responded to Myrtle St for report of an attempted larceny. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated while walking home, he was approached by a black male riding a bike who demanded he give up his wallet. When the victim stated he didn’t have it, the suspect punched him in the face resulting in his teeth getting broken. The victim then continued home. The suspect was gone upon police arrival.

Attempted Armed Robbery

22039359: On 7/15/22 at approximately 2:30 AM, Somerville Police responded to Jaques St for a check condition. Upon arrival, officers spoke with two juvenile males who stated they were approached by a male and female asking them for a lighter. When the juveniles stated they didn’t have one, one of the suspects brandished a knife and demanded they give them a lighter. Both suspects then fled up Grant St. Both suspects were described as being in their fifties, the male was wearing all black and the female was wearing a blue shirt.

Firearm Recovered July 13 2022

On Wednesday, July 13, 2022, the Somerville Police and Cambridge Police, working collaboratively, served two search warrants at the homes of Ibrahim Barry, 18, Cambridge, and Craig Smith, 20, Cambridge, in furtherance of an investigation of a Somerville shooting incident that occurred on February 20, 2022 at 500 Mystic Avenue in Somerville. 

Barry was arrested pursuant to a warrant issued by the Somerville District Court for armed assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and assault and battery by means of a firearm. Smith was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm without a license, possession of a large capacity feeding device, failure to properly store a firearm and possession of ammunition.  An illegal loaded Glock, 40 caliber handgun was recovered from his home.  

Somerville Police Chief Charles Femino and Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow are very pleased with the results of this collaborative effort. Gun violence, particularly violence involving youth in our two communities, has been an ongoing concern and priority for both agencies and we remain deeply committed to aggressively investigating and mitigating such harmful activity.

Crime Log July 5 to July 11, 2022

Armed Robbery

22037502: On 7/6/22 at approximately 3:28 AM, officers responded to Albion St for report of an armed robbery. Upon arrival, officers spoke with the victim who stated an individual known to him assaulted him with a hammer then stole cash, an iPhone, Apple Watch and a gold necklace from him. The suspect then broke into the victim’s vehicle and stole several tools.
