HonorGuardsThe Special Operations Division is comprised of the Special Operations Unit*, and the Animal Control Unit. The division consists of one Lieutenant, one Sergeant, eight patrolmen, two civilians and a K-9.

The function of the Special Operations Division is to provide additional resources to the patrol division to assist them in combating crime and resolving quality of life issues which are impacting the community. These resources can be deployed in a variety of methods to meet the needs of the department and the community.

In addition, the Special Operations Division is responsible for devising comprehensive plans for large-scale police operations, the implementation of these plans and the supervision of the personnel assigned. Special Operations Supervisors have received extensive training in the Incident Command System which is utilized for large-scale police operations within the City of Somerville.


*The Auxiliary Police Unit which had assisted the Special Operations Division was disbanded in 2018 and is no longer a part of the Somerville Police Department.
